What is Photobiomodulation (PBM)?

Welcome to the world of Photobiomodulation! This cutting-edge technology has gained huge popularity in the health and wellness industry, and for good reason. Photobiomodulation, or low-level light therapy, is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes low-energy light with very specific wavelengths (633/660/810/850/940nanometers) within the visible and non-visible spectrum to stimulate cellular function, promote healing, and improve overall health.

The principle of the PBM is simple yet powerful. When exposed to red light at particular frequencies, our body’s cells absorb the energy and convert it into cellular fuel. This energy boost stimulates various physiological processes, leading to an array of potential health benefits.

With significant development by many organisations, including NASA, it’s a natural and safe technology that’s free from the side effects often associated with medications and surgical procedures.

At Camden’s House, our equipment isn’t the ‘at home’ off the shelf equipment. We have a professional grade full-body photobiomodulation pod for the most effective and safe PBM sessions (more below).

What is PBM used for?

PBM is a general purpose wellness technology and not a specific purpose medical device. Our PBM system isn’t intended to be a cure or treatment for any one particular injury or condition. Rather, PBM has general energising effects at the cellular level helping the body’s own cellular function. This in turn can cause a diverse range of positive outcomes.

At Camden’s House we are very careful to respect the fact that qualified medical advice must be at the core of decision-making in relation to the treatment of any particular injury or condition. So we always encourage (and sometimes require) our customers to speak with their doctor before utilising PBM.

People around the world have long been turning to the beneficial effects of PBM in the following ways. But we always defer to qualified medical advice about what is best for your particular circumstances.
  • Skin Health and Anti-Aging: The stimulation of collagen production, helping to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and improve overall skin tone.
  • Wound Healing and Tissue Repair: Acceleration of the body’s natural healing process, making it beneficial for wounds, burns, and scars.
  • Pain and Inflammation Reduction: Reducing inflammation and pain in conditions like arthritis, muscle sprains, and joint disorders.
  • Improved Athletic Performance and Recovery: Enhancing cellular energy to aid muscle recovery after workouts and improve athletic performance.
  • Mental Wellbeing: alleviation of the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Hair Growth: Stimulation of hair follicles to promote hair growth.

PBM is a general wellness system and not designed to be a targeted medical treatment. It’s important to note that individual responses to PBM may vary, and its effectiveness can depend on factors such as the intensity and duration of treatment and individual health characteristics.

Camden’s House cannot offer any medical advice, including diagnosing any medical condition or advising upon particular treatment options. We always encourage customers to consult with their doctor if there is a particular injury or condition what they wish to address.

What happens in a PBM Session at Camden’s House?

  • After checking in at our reception, you will be shown to the PBM room and the professional PBM pod will be activated for you. You will then be left to get undressed and lie inside the PBM pod for the duration of the session.

  • You will be given the option of earplugs for enhanced relaxation. Alternatively you may want to use your phone/earphones while you relax. You will also be given goggles for eye protection.

  • Sessions are 30 minutes long (20 minutes in the PBM pod).

How often should I have PBM sessions?

Much depends on what your objective is. But the more it is used (within the safe 20 minute duration of sessions) the more effective PBM will be. We recommend customers consider a burst of high-frequency use for a health re-charge– such as 3-5 times a week for 2 or 3 weeks.

Think of PBM like going to the gym for your cells. One gym session can make you feel good, but the real effects come with multiple (and ideally ongoing) sessions.

We offer multi-session recharge packages which reduce the cost per session. We also offer ‘Lifestyle’ Memberships for those who want to make PBM a permanent part of a healthier lifestyle. Regular and consistent use creates the best prospects for realising long-term health and longevity effects.

Our State of the Art PBM pod

At Camden’s House, we have invested to bring our clients a premium PBM whole-body pod unlike anything you will not find anywhere in or near Aberdeen.

It is professional grade technology utilising no less than 18,000 LEDs projecting visible red light and near infrared light at very precise frequencies of 633nm, 660nm, 810nm, 850nm, and 940nm across the whole body simultaneously. This is nothing like the off the shelf products for limited facial treatments which have become popular in recent years.

You really do need to see that intense light in order to believe it. Our Camden’s House customers deserve only the best!

Is PBM safe?

PBM is approved by the US FDA and generally considered safe so long as it is not over-used (which is why we have a maximum session duration of 20 minutes). PBM has been used worldwide for many years. According to the PBM Foundation, PBM has had no documented negative side-effects among over 100 million patient sessions since its discovery in 1967.

Who should not use PBM

  • Persons who suffered burns in the last 24-48 hour period should avoid exposure to PBM

  • Persons with malignant cancer

  • Persons with hyperthyriodism in the neck or upper chest

  • Persons with epilepsy

  • Pregnant women

  • Persons with eye disease

  • Persons with a light sensitivity condition

Also note, tattoos may be prone to fading when exposed to PBM (particularly where the tattoo uses red ink). We always encourage consultation with your doctor or other licensed medical provider if you suffer from any particular injury or condition. All customers will be required to sign a Declaration Form, undertaking that they do not fall within any of the above categories before a PBM session is commenced. If there are any uncertainties it is likely that we will insist that your doctor provide advice before proceeding with a PBM session.

The Science Behind PBM

Every one of our 37 trillion cells contains mitochondria. Mitochondria produces energy for the cells in the form of adenosine triphosphate ‘ATP’. However, when we get injured, stressed or aged, the mitochondria in our cells produce less ATP (energy) and more ‘free radicals’ called ‘ROS’. These ROS leads to inflammation, cell death and the triggering of genetic weaknesses. This can lead to degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis, dementia, Parkinsons Disease, cancer and others. When we apply light at just the right wavelength, intensity and time parameters, inflammatory cytokines are reduced, ATP is increased and the cells produce more energy and have various positive effects on the body, in particular quicker healing.

The specific light used in PBM reaches deeper into the body than other types of light therapies, such as UV tanning beds. This allows the positive energy-making effects to activate throughout the body.
